This week: News about Nagano and Nézet-Séguin; renos in Winnipeg; optimism in Windsor; and an agreement in Saint Paul. Here are stories we're following...

  • The town's other music director, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, got a write-up in the Montreal Gazette last week, looking at his predilection for themed programming. The same article takes a look at the OSM's increasing use of medici.tv.
  • CBC reports that the Winnipeg Symphony is starting big renovations to the 99-year-old Pantages Playhouse, which will include a new rehearsal space, bistro, administrative offices, and recording studio.
  • Following a meeting with Windsor Mayor Eddie Francis, incoming Windsor Symphony music director Robert Franz wrote a letter, published in the Star, in which he calls Windsor "a city of possibilities" and looks forward to serving the community.
  • Some of the smallest communities in Saskatchewan got a taste of the Regina Symphony last week, as their Music on the Road series visited Shaunavon, Swift Current, Indian Head, Assiniboia, Moose Jaw, and Weyburn, the Leader-Post reports.
  • And the Toronto Star posted an admiring review of the Victoria Symphony's recent Chinatown celebration, featuring a new work by Chan Ka Nin, and other recent initiatives by the VS and music director Tania Miller.
  • Turning to US orchestra news, the Jacksonville Symphony reached a long-awaited agreement this week, the Florida Times-Union reports. The deal splits the difference between the previous salary and weeks and the one imposed by the board last September. Both sides applauded consultant Henry Fogel for his help facilitating the compromise.
  • Robert Levine has compiled a list of symphonic musicians who died in 2012, posted on Polyphonic.org, and asks for corrections and/or additions.
  • And in late-breaking news, the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra reached an agreement on Tuesday night, the Pioneer Press reports. The orchestra will resume concerts this season while details are finalized in a play-and-talk negotiation.
